Final Week

The Call To Artists was, essentially, my final examination; so that only means that my work here at the gallery is soon to come to a close. I whipped out a gallery poster for the upcoming PK Yonge Honors Show last week (see below), and wrote up/sent out some acceptance and rejection letters for the gallery. All that's left is contract signing and something tells me that getting students to come in between finals week and summer vacation is going to be the most difficult way of finishing off the semester. I do think I'll miss the authority of the position, but it's been a great run and I do think I've done the best I could and learned the most possible from the job.

Week 13

The Call to Artists has been conducted and there is a new show up in the gallery called "Las mentiritas (The Little Lies)". This time around there were a lot of issues with the artist: after sending her poster in at the last minute and having us print them off, she wanted to change the design. Unfortunately, we were unable to do that for her, so when it came time for the press release I chose not to include the picture of her poster, but a previously supplied image of one of her paintings; which she also disapproved of. What's more, several of her works in the gallery were peeling off the wall.

But, everything is in order now and we had the committee meeting to vote on next semester's exhibition schedule. The meeting went incredibly smoothly for the most part except that the artists who submitted work somehow found out where and when the meeting took place. They really thought that they were able to vote for their own and others' proposals. So, many people were turned away and another had to get their scorecard withdrawn. There were still other members who expressed a bias only after the fact, so their scores had to be highly considered. The votes were tallied today, so now it's all a matter of emailing the artists with their respective good and bad news.

The rubric is as follows, (based on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best):

Communication of concept through work
Effectiveness of artistic elements and principles
Appropriate use of tools and materials
Development of proposal
Overall rating

I think that it was a great rating system! The only thing that took a long time in the meeting was reading the often over-wrought artist statements. But in the end, I was very surprised -happily so!- by the winners. This will be a truly unique exhibition schedule with a lot of variety in work.

Oh yeah, and not only did I get a job in the Reitz Union with a print graphics position, but I have an interview today with an internship at Giggle Magazine. This internship has definitely helped prepare me to move onto greater things.
